Average Golf Club Distances by Club
How far should each club go? There is no universal answer — distance depends on swing speed, strike and conditions — but understanding typical ranges, and how loft drives them, helps you gap your set and pick the right club.
Loft is the engine of distance
Within a set, the reason a 7-iron flies further than an 8-iron is mostly loft: less loft launches the ball lower with less spin, so it carries and rolls further. That is why an even step in loft from club to club produces an even step in distance. If you know your loft gaps are consistent, your distance gaps usually will be too.
Typical carry distance ranges
The figures below are broad averages for recreational golfers. Stronger, faster players will exceed them; many golfers will sit below. Treat them as a shape, not a target.

Why your numbers are the ones that matter
Averages are useful for a sanity check, but your own carry distances are what you should play to. Spend a session measuring each club and write the numbers down. Play to your realistic carry, not your single best strike — course management improves fastest when you are honest about how far you actually hit each club.
Watch for the modern-loft effect
If your irons have strong modern lofts, the numbered clubs will fly further than the traditional expectation — a modern 7-iron can carry what an older 6-iron did. That is not extra skill, just less loft. It is another reason to measure your own set rather than assume a "7-iron distance" means the same thing across brands.
Carry versus total distance
When you talk about how far a club goes, be clear whether you mean carry (how far it flies through the air) or total (carry plus roll). Carry is the number that matters for clearing hazards and holding greens, and it is the more reliable figure to plan with, because roll depends heavily on how firm the ground is. When you measure your distances, note carry first — it changes far less from day to day than total distance does.
How to measure your own distances
The most accurate way is a launch monitor, which reports carry directly. If you do not have access to one, use a range with marked targets or a course you know, hit several balls with each club, ignore your best and worst, and take the middle. Repeat over a few sessions. The aim is a realistic, repeatable number for each club, not a hero figure you can reach once in ten swings.
Turn distances into better decisions
Once you know your real carry distances, course management gets much easier. You can pick the club that carries a bunker rather than the one that reaches the flag on a perfect strike, and you stop leaving approach shots short. Combined with even loft gapping, honest distances are one of the fastest routes to lower scores, and they cost nothing but a little time on the range.
